Nike and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital unveiled the new Doernbecher Freestyle X collection, marking the tenth anniversary of the collaborative series that sees current and former Doernbecher patients design special edition shoes for Nike, with the resultant sales benefitting the hospital.
Elijah went to Doernbecher to undergo chemotherapy for Burkitt’s Leukemia, and he incorporated that experience as well as elements of his personality into the Foamposite’s design. The smiley-face logo that adorns the shoe is his own personal design, spelling out his initials when turned sideways, while a chain-link graphic on the sockliner is inspired by a bracelet his parents gave him when he started chemo.
